Target practice: in California and elsewhere, state officials are taking shots at hospital sales to for-profits

Article Abstract:

State regulators are increasingly raising questions about the acquisition of community hospitals by for-profit companies. The number of hospitals converting from nonprofit to for-profit status increased from 4 in 1992 to 58 in 1995 to 50 during the first half of 1996. Such for-profit conversions require public hearings and government review in California and 10 other states. California's investigation into Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp.'s planned joint venture with Sharp Healthcare is discussed.

Rural routes: for small-town hospitals, nearly all paths lead to this: convert, downsize, network

Article Abstract:

Rural hospitals often convert their facilities, downsize staff or join health networks in order to stay competitive in the changing healthcare market. Physician Tamton Mustapha stands as a visionary in this competitive environment. He and other physicians in Columbia County, NY, bought out a rural hospital that was closed by the state and transformed it into the Valetia Medical Arts Building.
