The demand for health with uncertainty and insurance

Article Abstract:

An enhanced demand-for-health model originally developed by Michael Grossman was utilized to assess individual's health-related attitude. The model, which was partly developed by allowing depreciation rate to rely on health level, showed that an individual's willingness to pay (WTP) behavior tends to be affected by the presence of insurance and uncertainty in the level of health. The two factors are found to be useful in explaining some of the variations in the WTP for health care programs.

Consumer information and competition between nonprofit and for-profit nursing homes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze outcomes of the hypothesis that nonprofit organizations are common in health care because of uncertainties in quality. The capability of nonprofit institutions to lessen market failures resulting from asymmetric information was also examined. Results indicated that the effects of competition from the nonprofit sector on the performance of the for-profit sector correlated with the nonprofit market share.

Choosing between public and private health care: a case study of malaria treatment in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Studies conducted on malaria-infected individuals living in the Machadinho colonization project in Brazil have shown that a patient tends to consider several economic and geographic factors when choosing the kind of treatment for his illness. These factors, which include household wealth, transportation and the cost of treatment, underscore the need for health care programs that will focus on the needs of rural households.
