The impact of insurance on access to physician services for elderly people with arthritis

Article Abstract:

A study aimed at examining the relationship of insurance coverage to the use of physician services for the treatment of elderly people with arthritis was presented. The results supported the hypothesis that lack of Medicare supplementation is one barrier to a patient's use of arthritis-related services. Arthritic patients without Medicare supplemental insurance were found to be the least likely to utilize physician services for their arthritic conditions. Medicaid recipients, however, were found to obtain twice as many physician services as the Medicare-only group.

Health plan report cards and insurance choice

Article Abstract:

Employees given the option of selecting their health insurance were shown to put little stock on health plan ratings but were shown to rely on other sources of information regarding their choice of health insurance provider. Employees used only the 'enrollee satisfaction' parameter in the ratings and relied more on their perception of service quality, such as the depth of physician panels and out-of-pocket prices in choosing their preferred providers.

An examination of the decline in employment-based health insurance between 1988 and 1993

Article Abstract:

A study showed that the percentage of salaried workers with employment-based health insurance decreased from 68.6% to 65% between 1988 and 1993. The results revealed that 24% to 51% of the decline was due to a decrease in the percentages of employers with health insurance, a decrease in real wages and an increase in part-time employment. The change in family income and industry composition caused a major decline in employment-based health insurance.
