This hospital for sale

Article Abstract:

The board of AtlantiCare Medical Center chose to affiliate with the nonprofit North Shore Medical Center/Partners Healthcare in April 1997 after engaging in an unusually public decision-making process. AtlantiCare, the only hospital in Lynn, MA, worked with a citizen task force during the effort to choose between nonprofit and for-profit bidders. The hospital, which has 150 beds, suffered a $2 million loss in 1996. Part of its deal with North Shore involves a guarantee of AtlantiCare's debt, which totals $38 million.

Saved by sacrifice

Article Abstract:

Boston's Franciscan Children's Hospital and Rehabilitation Center has rebounded from near closure. In 1992 the hospital lost a third of its revenues, thanks to the Massachusetts Medicaid program's decision to cut payments for the care of behaviorally disturbed children. New CEO Paul DellaRocco has instituted major cutbacks, including the closing of Franciscan's inpatient psychiatric unit, but has retained quality of care as a top priority.

A lot is not enough; for foundations spun off by hospital sales, even billions go only so far

Article Abstract:

A total of 81 foundations have been established in 30 states from 1994 to 1997. The average foundation has $57 million in assets. Foundation resources must be used in their local communities or the state in which they are established. The dispersal of funds and who decides how to disperse the funds is the subject of debate.
