Tissue oxygenation and routine nursing procedures in critically ill patients

Article Abstract:

Part of the critical care nurse's job is the maintenance of adequate oxygenation to promote patients' vital organ functions. Those of their patients who have impaired cardiac function may be particularly vulnerable to tissue oxygen deprivation due to their limited ability to raise oxygen delivery when demands increase. Routine nursing procedures which raise oxygen requirements may affect tissue oxygenation adversely. There are, however, interventions which enhance patient tolerance for nursing procedures by supporting the balance between oxygen supply and demand. These may prevent adverse events associated with hypoxia.

Complementary therapy and cardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

The Complementary Care Center (CCC) at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, NY, is studying the use of alternative medical practices in concert with conventional treatment in the care of cardiac surgery patients. All patients scheduled for coronary artery bypass surgery are offered complementary care, such as aromatherapy, prayer, music therapy, massage, hypnosis, therapeutic touch, yoga, meditation, and other techniques to reduce stress, promote healing, and improve quality of life. Participating patients are encouraged to continue wellness practices after discharge.
