Two years...and counting

Article Abstract:

American Hospital Assn Pres Dick Davidson reaffirms his commitment to healthcare reform. He believes that American hospitals have already begun the process of collaboration and systems integration; Pres Clinton's federal healthcare reform plan will reinforce the direction they are already taking. Davidson is happy with the input that hospitals have had in Hillary Rodham Clinton's healthcare task force and feels that the biggest job ahead for healthcare reform is selling it to the general public.

Revisiting our ideas about health

Article Abstract:

The failure of health care reform legislation in 1994 provides an opportunity to examine critical issues regarding reform. True reform can only be accomplished if the goals of the health care industry are re-examined in light of a changing population. Health care reform legislation failed largely because most of the debate concerned how it would be paid for, rather than how the system would deliver. A new goal of reform should be the extension of health to an aging population.

The CEO as politico

Article Abstract:

Former American Hospital Association Chairman Gail Warden has been active in policy and politics over his long career. While serving as CEO of several health organizations, Warden also got involved in the passage of Washington state's Basic Health Plan, and in discussions over what to do about the future of Medicare and Medicaid. He advised hospitals to join bipartisan efforts in order to surmount their reputation of just being a public interest group.
