Uncalculated risks: why risk managers won't benchmark

Article Abstract:

Benchmarks for hospital risks can provide healthcare managers with useful statistics to measure medical care results against the desired outcome, although risk managers face resistance and obstacles to compiling data. In particular, difficulties in defining terms and tracking results can block the process of determining benchmarks. Applying a benchmark and finding the correct one also can be difficult. In addition, hospitals and doctors shy away from revealing details about medical errors and information that may be used by a competing medical establishment.

Brand central

Article Abstract:

HealthSouth Chairman and CEO Richard Scrushy says he recognized in the early 1980s that hospitals would face increasing cost pressures and that the trend would create opportunities for outpatient treatment and rehabilitation. HealthSouth subsequently expanded into the only firm with hospitals, clinics and related facilities in every state. Scrushy says BellSouth's attractiveness to managed care companies has played a large part in its success. He also feels that establishing a national image for BellSouth has been important.

Answers from the audit trail

Article Abstract:

Hospitals and health plans can develop compliance programs using several simple steps. Since most are already performing compliance processes such as internal reviews and audits, establishing a formal plan primarily involves educating staff on procedures, ensuring follow-through, emphasizing diplomacy and top-down commitment to the program.
