When age becomes ageless

Article Abstract:

The health care industry stands to lose business if more of the aging population in the US retain their health. Visionary Marvin Cetron predicted that nursing homes and hospitals would be hit hardest by this trend. The corresponding reduction in business would affect the industry's laborforce, stated Cetron. However, National Institute on Aging deputy associate director Huber Warner noted that there is no definite scientific basis yet for concluding that life spans will increase. Michigan State University professor of clinical medicine Michael Fosser believes that new knowledge on cellular aging will prolong human lives.

Consumers

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by the United Hospital Fund reveals that the health care system in the US depends heavily on unpaid family caregivers. The study approximates that it would require almost $200 billion to pay the 25 million family caregivers in the US, compared to only around $30 billion spent yearly on home care. Even as the study forecasts that the pressure will only intensify, the organization has also discovered that several trends are further aggravating the situation, such as incrementally shorter hospital stays, increasingly complicated equipment used in home care, and an aging population.

The long reach of bugs without borders

Article Abstract:

Dangerous microbes brought by international travelers can easily infect the US population. Many diseases survive covertly despite advances made in diagnostic methods. Around 2,000 relatively-healthy people in the country die quickly from undiagnosed illness. In fact, Center for Disease Control and Prevention special pathogens unit head C.J. Peters noted that these mysterious bacterial and viral agents may trigger a public health crisis. Parasitic and infectious diseases are known as fatal threats to the populations of poorer nations.
