Will the real nurse please stand up?

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are replacing registered nurses with unlicensed aides to reduce staffing costs. The American Nurses Association has spoken out against the practice and the National Research Council's Institute on Medicine has voiced concern that aides with limited training may not be prepared to deal with the challenges of patient care. White Plains Hospital Center is using the situation to its advantage by advertising that 92% of its nursing staff are registered nurses.

Blue skies or black eyes? Hedis puts not-for-profit plans on top

Article Abstract:

The Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (Hedis) reports quality statistics for a variety of for-profit and non-profit health insurance plans. Of the 329 health plans analyzed using Hedis data, Hospitals and Health Networks magazine found that not-for-profits plans had higher customer satisfaction ratings and offered better preventive care services than for-profit plans.

Where have all the RNs gone?

Article Abstract:

There are fewer nurses to fill the demand in 1998. The reasons for this lack of supply include fewer students in nursing schools and cost reduction efforts by hospitals. Many have also left the position due to relocation, better hours and the increased workload. It will be important for hospitals to implement retention programs.
