Winding down the wait

Article Abstract:

Sewickley Valley Hospital has cut patient waiting time before surgery by incorporating several changes. More front-line hospital personnel was hired to handle patients and the pre-op process was streamlined. In addition, surgery scheduling began to reflect more realistic estimations. As a result, waiting times have been decreased from a typical 76 minutes to 20 minutes.

Collective threat: chicago nurses find that talk of organizing is enough to bring change

Article Abstract:

Nurses at Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital discovered that their threat to organize into a union was sufficient to bring about change. The hospital replaced its unpopular CEO and implemented a new grievance mechanism for clinical care decisions, thereby giving nurses a way to voice their concerns. As a result of these changes, the nurses voted against unionizing.

Healthcare companies have increasingly turned to strategic partnerships, alliances, and mergers in response to the challenges of the healthcare market. About one-third of non-profit hospitals have joined a health system in the past five years, whereas 62% of for-profits hospitals have been acquired. Acquisitions are also frequent among managed care companies.
