A 51-year-old Ethiopian woman with myalgia, weight loss, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy

Article Abstract:

A 51-year-old Ethiopian woman was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the mediastinal lymph nodes, or the lymph nodes in the chest. Upon admission to the hospital, the patient was suffering from lymph node inflammation and pain in different parts of her body. She had begun experiencing pain in her shoulders, arms and legs 15 months before being admitted to the hospital. Despite treatment, she had continued to develop other symptoms such as sweats, decreased appetite, headaches and myalgia and joint pain. Laboratory tests revealed anemia and increased blood levels of certain proteins. A chest X-ray and a CT scan of her chest revealed enlarged lymph nodes in her lungs. A biopsy of a mediastinal lymph node revealed that the patient was suffering from tuberculosis of the mediastinal lymph nodes. She recovered after long-term treatment with different antibiotics.

A 37-year-old man with fever and diffuse lymphadenopathy

Article Abstract:

A 37-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with fever, chills, weight loss, anemia, and enlarged lymph nodes. He was homeless and had a history of alcohol and drug abuse. He tested positive for HIV although a test one month before admission had been negative. He was diagosed with acute HIV infection. Examination of a lymph node biopsy sample revealed that he also had disseminated tuberculosis. Normally, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis only infects the lungs, but it can infect other tissues. When it does, the infection is called miliary, or disseminated, tuberculosis.
