Article Abstract:

A 37-year-old man was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation of the large and small intestines. Arteriovenous malformation of the intestines is an abnormality of the arteries and veins in the gastrointestinal tract. The patient was admitted to the hospital after passing bloody stools over a six-day period. He had had similar episodes seven and fourteen years earlier. Barium-enema examination of the colon revealed an abnormal sigmoid colon. The patient was diagnosed with vascular malformations of the gastrointestinal tract, and much of the colon was removed surgically to prevent further bleeding. Six months after the operation, the patient had not had any more bleeding episodes.

A six-year-old boy with bouts of abdominal pain, vomiting, and a left-sided abdominal mass

Article Abstract:

A six-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital with recurrent abdominal pain, vomiting and weight loss. The pain worsened after meals. Physical examination revealed a mass in his abdomen. A stool test revealed that he had blood in his stool and he was also anemic. This indicated that he had chronic bleeding. His physicians diagnosed intussusception, which occurs when one part of the intestines slides into another part in the same way a telescope folds up. A CT scan showed that the intussusception was in his duodenum, which is very unusual. It also revealed a tumor called a lipoma, which was surgically removed.

A 39-year-old man with diarrhea and abdominal pain after chemotherapy for acute leukemia

Article Abstract:

Neutropenic enterocolitis may be a complication of treatment for acute leukemia. It is characterized by low levels of mature white blood cells and inflammation of the bowels. A 39-year-old man was hospitalized with acute leukemia, and given chemotherapy including daunorubicin, cytarabine, methotrexate, and hydrocortisone. He reported increasing abdominal pain, and bowel sounds diminished after nine to 12 hospital days. Blood tests showed very low levels of mature white blood cells resulting from the leukemia and chemotherapy. The entire colon was removed because of the extent of inflammation.
