A 41-year-old woman with a swollen left leg, pelvic mass, and bilateral hydronephrosis

Article Abstract:

A 41-year-old woman who had an intrauterine device (IUD) was diagnosed with pelvic actinomycosis, a form of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Actinomycosis is a disease caused by actinomyces bacteria, bacteria that normally grow in the mouth without causing disease. These bacteria can grow on IUDs and can cause serious infections in some women. The patient was admitted to the hospital with a pelvic mass that was pressing on her rectum and blocking the passage of urine from both her kidneys. Doctors took samples of the pelvic mass and unsuccessfully tried to remove the patient's IUD on two occasions. Infectious-disease and pathology specialists who examined the samples of the pelvic mass determined that the patient had an actinomyces infection. The patient was treated with different intravenous antibiotics and would eventually have to undergo a hysterectomy.
