A 41-year-old woman with muscle weakness, painful paresthesias, and visual problems

Article Abstract:

A 41-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital with a rash, muscle pain and weakness, painful numbness and tingling in her extremities and visual disorders. She tested positive for hepatitis C virus and consequently, her doctors suspected an infectious or autoimmune cause for her symptoms. A muscle biopsy revealed vasculitis, which is an inflammation of blood vessels. A bone marrow biopsy showed that she had a B-cell lymphoma, which is a type of cancer. Hepatitis C virus has been found in many patients with B-cell lymphoma but how the virus causes the cancer is not clear.
