A 53-year-old man with fever and rapid neurologic deterioration

Article Abstract:

A 53-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with fever and changes in his mental status. He had developed a cold two weeks before admission. A CT scan of his head revealed fluid in his brain. He became comatose and died six days after admission. Because of the cold that preceded his neurologic symptoms, his physicians suspected viral encephalitis. This condition is an inflammation of the brain caused by a viral infection. An autopsy revealed no evidence of infection and led to a diagnosis of acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis, also known as Hurst's disease.

Rapid measurement of urinary trypsinogen-2 as a screening test for acute pancreatitis

Article Abstract:

A urinary dipstick test for trypsinogen-2 appears to be accurate in detecting patients who may have pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Researchers compared the urinary trypsinogen-2 dipstick test with two other tests commonly used to diagnose pancreatitis in 500 patients. The dipstick test detected 94% of those subsequently found to have pancreatitis and ruled out the disease in 95%. This was similar to one of the standard tests and better than the other one.

Case 19-2006: A 22-month-old boy with the rapid growth of subcutaneous nodules

Article Abstract:

A case study of a 22-month-old boy observed in the pediatric rheumatology clinic with enlarged subcutaneous nodules on the head, legs, and right hand is presented. The histologic differential diagnosis in the case was shown to be between subcutaneous granuloma annulare and rheumatoid nodule that might have low insulin levels and impaired glucose tolerance as compared with children without granuloma annulare.
