A bad press: madmen, psychos, nutters... these are some of the labels with which the tabloid press increasingly demonises people with mental health problems

Article Abstract:

The media is waging a campaign against people with mental health problems, especially those with schizophrenia. They have criticised well-researched health care practice and advocated the withdrawal of important civil liberties. Mental Health Media has been set up to respond to the negative press, by making its own comments and enabling other voices to the heard. It provides training materials for journalists, local and health authorities. MIND, the mental health charity, has shown that neighbourhood opposition to service has disrupted services and led to attacks on services users, staff and property.

How to prevent injury caused by moving and handling

Article Abstract:

Over 3,600 UK nurses are forced to retire each year due to injuries caused by handling and moving patients, according to nursing unions. The Health and Safety Executive reports an accident rate of 15,000 injuries, with 60% related to moving and handling from 1994-7. Injuries could be reduced if health trusts introduced a policy of minimal patient handling, use risk assessment techniques and increase use of lifting and handling equipment. Hoists, stair lifts and specially adapted wheelchairs would all reduce the number of injuries caused by handling and moving.

US Health minister stated that home managers need to be encouraged and guided to take practical action to reduce the risks of falls, and play their part in maintaining older people's independence and well-being. Hence, it is suggested that all health and care services should be operating an integrated falls service to prevent falls.
