A breath of fresh air

Article Abstract:

Treating halitosis, or bad breath, should become a focus in dental services. Halitosis is a very pervasive problem in American society, and people with bad breath purchase over-the-counter products, get treated at specialized business franchises or subscribe to treatments offered on the Internet. Media coverage has also focused on the importance of personal grooming and appearance. Dentists should not waste the opportunity to incorporate this booming demand into routine practice.

Those who can, do

Article Abstract:

Many dental students need to be encouraged to pursue a career in academics. Between 1992 and 1997, the number of vacant academic positions increased from 139 to 244. Yet only 0.5% of a survey of dental students in 1998 said they were interested in an academic career. School loans could be one of the reasons, and the perception that academic jobs don't pay as well. More than half the existing dental faculty members could retire in the first decade of the 21st century.

'Freshly washed little cherubs': the clinical board examination without patients would be more fair and predictable, and no one would flunk if a patient was a no-show

Article Abstract:

The American Dental Association House of Delegates in 2000 passed a resolution calling for the elimination of live patients in the dental clinical licensure examination. As of 2000, clinical licensure exams are held in various cities at various times, so students must pay the cost of travel and lodging. It would be more convenient to have dental schools ensure the clinical competency of their graduates.
