A complement to care

Article Abstract:

Dorothy Crowther established the Wirral Holistic Care Service (WHCS) in 1988, with the aim of helping cancer patients and their carers to have a better quality of life through the use of supportive and complementary services. Patients want to know about their illness, which gives them a greater feeling of control. Different therapies are used to help patients ease pain, relax or feel more confident in themselves. The WHCS is charity-funded and has a team of 70 skilled staff.

Yesterday once more

Article Abstract:

Liverpool University's Department of Nursing is establishing an oral history of nursing based in Merseyside. The pilot project, which is the first such study in the UK, draws together the observations of 22 nurses working in Liverpool between 1919 and the 1960s and will form the basis of a new, two-year study entitled The History of Nursing in an English Urban Region from 1919. Topics discussed include conditions, attitudes, training and education.

Culture clash

Article Abstract:

Nurses need to have more background information when caring for dying children from different cultures. Nurses may experience gender problems, with families unwilling to have their adolescent girl treated by a male nurse. Health workers may be hindered in bereavement counselling of relatives by language barriers.
