A controlled study of the effect of one lesson on the knowledge and attitudes of schoolchildren concerning HIV and Aids

Article Abstract:

A study designed to assess the outcome of a single lesson on AIDS and HIV infection on a group of Finnish schoolchildren is presented. The sample of 15-year-olds selected randomly in the city of Oulo were given one 45 minute lesson, and their attitudes were evaluated via a questionnaire before and after. The study shows that pupils of both sexes significantly increased their knowledge about HIV infection and AIDS. However, girls were shown to boost their knowledge using the questionnaire alone, while boys' knowledge only increased after the intervention lesson.

Health visitors and teachers: developing a working partnership in sex education

Article Abstract:

The role of a health visitor in relationship to young people and sex education is changing. The partnership between a health visitor in Oban, Scotland, and schools in the area shows how a health visitor's role is moving towards targeting priority groups, such as adolescents, and away from routine pre-school visits. The vulnerability of adolescents to AIDS and HIV infection increases the importance of such programs in teaching responsibility for health behavior.

Attitudes towards HIV and AIDS health promotion in the probation service: the contribution of training and policy

Article Abstract:

A questionnaire investigating the attitudes of staff in a UK probation service to their compulsory training programme on AIDS and HIV shows a general level of increased awareness and understanding. It was generally agreed that the service's AIDS policy was relevant. The response suggests that the probation services can make a valuable contribution to the common awareness of HIV and AIDS and indicates a need for further training and education.
