How healthy is school PE? A review of the effectiveness of health-related physical education programmes in schools

Article Abstract:

Physical education (PE) in schools is a compulsory part of the UK National Curriculum because it supposedly encourages children to enjoy exercise and lead a healthier life. Children's aerobic capacity, muscular strength and blood pressure improve as a result of doing PE. However, it is unproven whether these health benefits carry over into their adult life, and children who find PE difficult may reject all forms of exercise as adults. Nor is it clear that children understand the connection between physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Physical activity levels of young children: a review of the evidence

Article Abstract:

A study of the activity patterns of young people is essential in the light of evidence that their activity levels are declining and that coronary heart disease may begin as early as childhood. Studies undertaken in the Netherlands and the USA show that young people do not do enough physical exercise to improve their cardiovascular state, and numerous other studies have shown that children of primary age are generally not very active. Very little information is available on activity patterns of children in the UK.

Physical activity levels of secondary-aged children: a review

Article Abstract:

A study of the physical activity levels of secondary-aged children is essential to a clearer understanding of the activity levels of children as a whole. A number of British and international studies have used a range a methods to assess physical activity, but all indicate consistently low levels of activity. This must be taken into account when promoting health among the young.
