Article Abstract:

The development of a new theatre nurse-led policy of dealing with organic waste material has reduced cross-infection and patient contamination at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Scotland. The new policy was introduced by a specialist nurse-led group aimed at improving safety measures in hospital theatres. Improved policies were implemented for safety clothing, scrub techniques, disposal and handling of organic waste and sterilization methods.

A world of difference: After years of striving, theatre nurses' perioperative role has finally been recognized

Article Abstract:

Theatre nurses have wanted recognition as perioperative nurses for some time. Perioperative nurses will be involved in a preassessment clinic, involving the holistic assessment of patients' conditions, which is important when preparing patients for surgery. There are many opportunities for new roles, such as first assistant and surgical assistant, becoming directly involved in patient treatment.

Article Abstract:

A charge nurse describes his visits to a patient both before and after a femur operation, during his time as a theatre nurse. The pre-operative visit was used to inform the patient about theatre procedures and the post-operative visit assessed whether the procedures could have been improved to the benefit of the patient.
