A controlled trial of bismuth subsalicylate in infants with acute watery diarrheal disease

Article Abstract:

Bismuth subsalicylate may be an effective and safe treatment for watery diarrhea in infants and toddlers. This drug has been available since the early 1900s, but its effectiveness and safety has only been tested recently. Among 252 male infants and toddlers who were hospitalized with watery diarrhea, 85 were treated with 100 milligrams (mg) of bismuth subsalicylate per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day, 83 were treated with 150 mg of bismuth subsalicylate per kg of body weight per day and 84 received a placebo, or an inactive substance, for up to five days. Eighty-nine percent of the children in the 100 mg group and 88% in the 150 mg group stopped having diarrhea within five days of being admitted to the hospital, compared with 74% of the children in the placebo group. The children treated with bismuth subsalicylate drank less oral rehydration fluid and were released from the hospital earlier than those who received a placebo.
