A detailed comparison of physician services for the elderly in the United States and Canada

Article Abstract:

Elderly Canadians receive more physician services than their US counterparts. Researchers used claims information from Medicare and the ministries of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia to estimate the cost and volume of physician services incurred by the elderly. Canada spends a little more than half what the US government spends on the elderly. However, the Canadians receive more services than their US counterparts, particularly in the area of home care and nursing home care. Canadian elderly receive four times as many home or nursing home visits as American elderly. On the other hand, they receive fewer procedures, such as cardiovascular and orthopedic operations. The reason Canadian elderly receive many more basic services at half the cost overall is because the prices Canadian physicians charge for health care are less than half those in the US.

Gender Disparities in the Receipt of Home Care for Elderly People With Disability in the United States

Article Abstract:

Elderly women are less likely than elderly men to receive home care even if they are married, according to a study of 7,443 elderly people who still lived at home. Women were more likely to live alone than men and much less likely to be living with a spouse than men.
