Who should teach nurses?

Article Abstract:

The teaching of nurses in the United Kingdom has become a topic of debate as nurse education has moved toward higher education, and increasingly nurses are being taught by people from outside the profession. People who no longer work in the profession, or who have never done so, may focus on what should be, rather than the realities of nursing life. There is a danger that people who teach nurses lose touch with the profession, and there is a need for education to become more geared to the needs of nurses.

NVQ solution

Article Abstract:

The introduction of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) has affected nurse training. NVQs are based on the assumption that students already have experience or knowledge to do their jobs. However, the scheme was dismissed initially as people thought that competence in a job did not merit a qualification. The scheme involves credit accumulation and transfer.
