A dry run

Article Abstract:

The treatment of infantile incontinence for two physically handicapped children with severe learning difficulties, through a cartoon-based teaching programme, is discussed. A programme for a six year old girl was conceived, following thorough assessment of the child, by means of a dot to dot picture of a favourite cartoon character, Fireman Sam, and the child was allowed to join the dots and colour in the character as a reward for remaining dry at night. No other motivation was needed. An eight-year-old boy, incapable of following the dot-to-dot programme was taught through a game, which involved sticking on pieces of a picture of Rupert Bear as a reward for remaining dry at night. The cases have proved the value of an individual approach to treatment, together with humour and creativity.

Timely intervention

Article Abstract:

The problem of incontinence in continuing care patients at the nursing development unit at Witeabbey Hospital, Northern Ireland, is discussed. An action plan was devised to improve continence and the experience of two patients is described. A habit training programme specific to each patient was devised using hourly elimination assessment charts. The aim was to help the patients establish control by promoting voiding.
