Article Abstract:

The accreditation of prior learning (APL) and credit accumulation and transfer schemes (CATS), through schemes like the ENB accumulation Framework and Higher Award and the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is discussed. The impression is sometimes given in literature that obtaining academic accreditation following the compilation of a portfolio is a comparatively easy exercise. It can be costly and time consuming. Time and money could, however, be saved when an academic qualification is obtained if credits are earned as a result of the submission of a portfolio. Nurses need guidance on how to submit a valid portfolio.

A guiding light

Article Abstract:

The UKCC has introduced the concept of preceptorship into nursing by recommending that newly registered nurses be provided with support from a preceptor, an experienced nurse, midwife or health visitor, for a three- to six-month period after registration. Role modelling is a central element in preceptorship which involves one individual teaching another individual through the demonstration and application of 'precepts.' Preceptorship entails a one-to-one relationship of relatively short duration in which both learner and preceptor work in partnership with patients.

A new approach to practice development in mental health

Article Abstract:

A rehabilitation service at Prestwich Hospital, Manchester, aims to provide long stay continuing care to clients. The service sought to identify its key objectives from which future training initiatives could be developed, and to determine the roles and responsibilities of key personnel in relation to resources allocation. A staff appraisal system acted as a linchipin between the individual and organisational needs. A close linked was developed with the Salford and Bolton of Nursing to direct training resources and attract and retain high calibre staff.
