A first-hand look at the Russian medical system in 1992

Article Abstract:

Russian health care is substandard, largely because of a poor infrastructure produced by years of mismanagement. Because Russian medical care is 'free', patients spend protracted periods of time in the hospital recovering from minor injuries, such as sprained joints. Sterilization and anaesthesia monitoring are minimal during surgery, and even the most basic supplies are nearly impossible to obtain. However, there are many talented medical people in Russia who are eager to work for health care reform. US assistance would be invaluable in helping them restructure their system.

Medical waste disposal a regulatory nightmare

Article Abstract:

The laws concerning disposal of medical wastes, already involving six regulatory agencies and various state rules, are being further complicated by recommendations in the Senate by Max Baucus and David Durenberger. Epidemiological research published in 1991 reported no danger to public health, and no cases of infection have been proven. However, the proposed legislation would help the waste disposal industry, which is lobbying to make doctors and dentists their customers.
