A hard road to travel

Article Abstract:

Travelling people have difficulty getting access to adequate healthcare because they are constantly moving around. They cannot register with a doctor, often have literacy difficulties, and a poor understanding of health care issues. Those who want a permanent site for their caravan have difficulty getting one. Travellers face prejudice and discrimination when trying to use the health service. The 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act means that local authorities do not have to provide legal sites for travellers. This has added to their problems.

Constant caution

Article Abstract:

A nurse, Sue Clarke, whose young son suffers from anaphylaxis describes what it is like to care for him. Ms Clarke was unaware how severe the condition was until he experienced several anaphylactic reactions to milk and eggs, and she recounts the problems she encountered ensuring his safety at playgroup and school. Ms Clarke tries to give her son a normal family life, but eating out involves careful analysis of the menu and is fraught with danger. She is now a medical officer for the Anaphylaxis Campaign.
