A house call in the Andes

Article Abstract:

Volunteers with the nonprofit group Flying Doctors of America traveled to Peru in June 1996 to provide medical and dental care in the village of Huilloc in the Andes mountains. Over five days, the 18 physicians, dentists, nurses and chiropractors treated 1,200 Quechua Indians, who live without electricity or running water. Flying Doctors, formed in 1992, seeks to share US medical expertise with the less fortunate.

Healing the Children

Article Abstract:

Healing the Children is a non-profit organization which arranges medical and surgical care for impoverished children. The Spokane, WA-based organization sends teams of medical professionals to remote regions overseas through volunteer vacation programs. Food, housing and local transportation are provided by local hosts or through donations; volunteers finance their own air fare.

Article Abstract:

Physicians can improve their patient-retention rates by adopting ten service-oriented practices. Staff members can improve patients' perceptions of their care by carefully explaining medical and office procedures, simplifying billing statements, providing important information in writing and greeting patients by their first names.
