A new technique for restoration of worn anterior teeth - 1995

Article Abstract:

Dentists may use a modified technique to conservatively restore front teeth with discolored or decayed edges. The teeth should be shaped and smoothed prior to the delicate, precision-oriented tooth preparation procedure. A dental bonding agent is used to desensitize the teeth and to adhere to the dentin and enamel. The tooth preparation is completely filled with wear-resistant heavily filled microfill resin. Traditional finishing with disks, burs, diamonds, or stones is avoided to prevent mutilation of the tooth and the restoration edges. Instead, dentists should use a flexible rotary instrument to finish the restorative resin to the exact margins. The restoration is cured after finishing to promote optimal wear resistance and hardness along the biting surface. These restorations are esthetic, functional, and long-lasting.

A survey of ethical dilemmas and practical problems encountered by practicing dentists

Article Abstract:

The most common ethical and practical problems faced by dentists may involve patients, insurance companies, and infection control issues. Researchers surveyed 382 dentists to determine the ethical and practical problems they encounter in the 1990s. Dentists reported 309 ethical incidents. Ninety-six involved difficulties with patients. Common cases included patient dissatisfaction with treatment, patient requests for insurance fraud claims, and lawsuits or threats to sue. Eighty-nine ethical issues involved the work or behavior of other dentists. Dentists cited 538 practical problems. Of these, 134 involved insurance companies and 114 were related to AIDS or infection control issues. Complying with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's infection control regulations was the most common practical problem.

The credibility of dentists

Article Abstract:

Although surveys show that Americans rank dentists among the top 10 professions when it comes to ethics, dentists can improve their credibility even further. Factors that negatively affect a dentist's credibility include a self-promotional orientation, excessive treatment, excessive fees, and refusing to treat patients outside of traditional office hours.
