The ultimate gift: the number of transplants performed in the UK last year was 6% down on 1995 while the waiting list grew by 5%

Article Abstract:

Transplant coordinators are employed to educate the public, nurses and other health professions, liaising with the UK Transplant Service Authority. All donor and patient information is stored on computer and a 24 hour organ matching and allocation service is provided. Nurses lack confidence in broaching the subject of donation with relatives of donors, according to a survey. Also relatives are often concerned about the actual procurement, according to transplant coordinators, and some hospitals offer follow-up booklets and homes visits for the families of donors.

EN career development opportunities: conversion is by no means the only way for ENs to get ahead

Article Abstract:

Enrolled nurses must convert to first-level registration or their job opportunities will be greatly reduced, according to a UKCC report. Nurses can develop their competence by developing a profile that will help to focus on future professional development needs. ENs may have to put forward a case for funding and it is important to ensure that resources are used cost effectively. Conversion should be just one of several ways to develop a nursing career.
