Taking the pressure off

Article Abstract:

Patients should be assessed using appropriate risk strategies to determine the possibility of developing pressure sores, according to guidelines drawn up by the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP). The aim of the guidelines is to reduce the number of pressure sores occurring in patients, which is costly and unnecessary if dealt with properly. Assessment should cover skin type, general health, past history and mobility. The EPUAP is seeking to establish structured nurse teaching methods for the prevention of pressure sores.

How to achieve effective diabetes management: The complex nature of the condition means a multidisciplinary approach is the way forward

Article Abstract:

Specialists from many fields need to be involved in the different complications that can occur as a result of diabetes. A diabetes specialist nurse (DSN) will provide guidance for the patient and family, and the dietitian will discuss healthy eating along with broader issues. Counsellors may be required to help teenagers who try to ignore their condition, and a play specialist could be of help to younger children.
