Treatment of severe diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum with oral bovine immunoglobulin concentrate in patients with AIDS

Article Abstract:

Powdered bovine immunoglobulin concentrate may be an effective treatment for AIDS patients with severe diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum. This organism often causes diarrhea in AIDS patients and also commonly infects cows. Postpartum milk from cows has high levels of antibodies against Cryptosporidium. Researchers gave 24 AIDS patients with chronic diarrhea bovine immunoglobulin in the form of a capsule or powder. Twenty patients had documented Cryptosporidium infection. Powdered immunoglobulin significantly reduced the number of bowel movements per day as well as the amount of stool.

Evaluation of a new self-screening chart for cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with AIDS

Article Abstract:

An eye chart called the Teich Target appears to be more effective at diagnosing cytomegalovirus infections of the retina than the Amsler grid. The Teich Target consists of a central black fixation point surrounded by concentric circles of various colors intersected by radial lines. It can screen the retina 22.5 degrees out to either side from the fixation point. In 19 AIDS patients, the Teich Target diagnosed retinal abnormalities in 63% while the Amsler grid only identified 37%. The Teich Target detected 65% of retinal infections compared to the Amsler grid, which only detected 35%.
