Association of polymorphism in glutathione S-transferase loci in susceptibility and outcome in rheumatoid arthritis: comparison with shared epitope

Article Abstract:

Genes controlling the production and activity of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme may have some influence on the risk or outcome of rheumatoid arthritis. GST enzymes use byproducts of oxidation that can damage cells and cause inflammation. Researchers compared the genes of 277 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 577 healthy people. Particular genetic types were more common in patients with arthritis, and gene type appeared to influence the severity of disease and the functional abilities of patients.

Predictive diagnosis and genetic screening: manipulation of fate?

Article Abstract:

Several ethical issues surround genetic screening programs. Designed to diagnose gene mutations, hereditary diseases and genetic anomalies at their early stages, genetic screening improves chances of survival through preventive therapies. However, the detection of incurable diseases promotes anxieties and fears among medical patients and their family members. Geneticists are urged to consider different levels of motivation for predictive diagnoses, including therapeutic, pragmatic and emotional.
