Perioperative managed care reimbursements

Article Abstract:

Nurse administrators who assess how managed care affects their departments need to analyze their hospital's top payors by charges, revenue and volume. Members of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) may increase by as much as 50 mil people from 1997-2000, and health care facilities need to negotiate service rates with HMOs in order to compete. Contracting managers provide internal as well as external customers, and can be vital to establishing productive relationships with HMOs.

Automated medication dispensing systems

Article Abstract:

The automated medication dispensing system a nurse administrator chooses will affect hospital costs, staff performance, and the quality of medical care. Centrally located systems permit pharmacists to provide a range of unit doses, while decentralized systems offer easier nurse access to medications. Not all dispensing systems provide cost savings. Decisions to use such systems will depend on potentially reduced costs and the vendor's experience.
