A nurse-driven patient placement system

Article Abstract:

A multidisciplinary group examined patient placement in two pediatric units and revised hospital regulations to permit nurses to assign patient charges and transfers. Since over 20 medical disciplines practiced in these units, their efforts needed improved coordination. Nurse administrators, physicians and department representatives developed criteria to determine the intensity of nursing care and to lower the patient transfer rate. Nurses have increased communication and patients have received more consistent care.

Committee meetings: an electronic alternative

Article Abstract:

Computerizing committee meetings may offer an efficient way to improve member productivity. Sharing information through electronic mail keeps committee members individually accountable, saves travel time, treat all ideas as valuable, offers increased opportunity for participation, and reduces information overload. Computer-facilitated meetings are more cost-efficient than traditional meetings.

Workload measurement tracking system

Article Abstract:

An evaluation tool was developed to track the workload of nurses in a maternity care unit, since recording nursing hours per patient day did not sufficiently account for levels of patient care needs. A medical team created patient classification codes that were rated by intensity. Results from the tool have helped nurse administrators anticipate staff needs for the maternity unit.
