A plague upon the phagocytes

Article Abstract:

A new plague vaccine strategy that protects from lethal challenge with the pathogen while reducing undesirable immunosuppressive side effects is presented. A key component to developing better treatments for late-stage disease and a vaccine against plague is to gain an enhanced understanding how the plague bacillus causes human disease.

Rapid selection of complement-inhibiting protein variants in group A Streptococcus epidemic waves

Article Abstract:

During epidemic outbreaks, serotype M1 group A streptococci display a wide variety of Sic proteins, according to an analysis of 1,132 strains recovered from outbreaks in Canada, Finland, and the US. Sic proteins inhibit the human complement system and thereby promote the survival of the bacterium.

Evasion in human innate and acquired immunity by a bacterial homolog of CD11b that inhibits opsonophagocytosis

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the mechanisms used by the infectious agents to evade human immune system and cause disease. Results indicate that secreted protein, leukocyte beta (sub)2 integrin, inhibits phagocytosis via molecular mimicry.
