The acquisition of herpes simplex virus during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Contracting genital herpes during pregnancy may only be a risk to the baby if infection occurs close to the time of labor. Herpes infections in the newborn frequently cause death or severe brain damage. Researchers periodically tested blood samples from 7,046 pregnant women for antibodies to the genital herpes virus. Ninety-four developed antibodies, indicating herpes virus infection. The timing of exposure could be determined in 60 women. No infants contracted an infection except among the nine women who became infected close to the time of labor. Among these women, four infants became infected, and one died.
