Efficacy and safety of the neuraminidase inhibitor zanamivir in the treatment of influenzavirus infections

Article Abstract:

The drug zanamivir seems to be effective in reducing the symptoms and duration of influenza when given as an intranasal spray. Researchers randomly assigned 262 patients with influenza to self-administer a placebo or zanamivir twice a day for five days via a nasal spray and inhalation therapy. In those who began treatment within 30 hours of the illness, zanamivir reduced the duration of symptoms from seven days to four. Overall, the drug alleviated symptoms one day sooner than the placebo. Zanamivir also reduced the amount of virus shed in nasal secretions.

Zanamivir in the Prevention of Influenza Among Healthy Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

The drug zanamivir when inhaled once a day appears to be effective in preventing influenza. This drug inhibits the viral enzyme neuraminidase, which is essential for viral reproduction. Researchers randomly assigned 1107 healthy adults to inhale an aerosolized form of the drug or a placebo once a day for four weeks. Zanamivir was 67% effective in preventing influenza and did not have any serious side effects.
