A prospective study of calciotropic hormones in pregnancy and post partum: reciprocal changes in serum intact parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D

Article Abstract:

Pregnancy may increase levels of a vitamin D metabolite to increase calcium absorption but may not induce secondary hyperparathyroidism. Researchers analyzed the blood and urine of 23 pregnant women in the second and third trimesters and after delivery for hormones regulating calcium balance. Calcium levels in the urine were 250% to 300% higher during pregnancy than postpartum, and 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were twice as high during pregnancy. The higher levels of 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D during pregnancy may reduce levels of intact parathyroid hormone, which in turn may increase gastrointestinal absorption of calcium.

The association of fetal sex with the rate of cesarean section

Article Abstract:

Male fetuses may have a greater risk of cesarean delivery because of their larger size than females. Researchers analyzed delivery information for 2,439 low-risk mothers in spontaneous labor with their first child. The cesarean section delivery rate was higher for the 1,246 women bearing males (13.2%) than for the 1,193 women bearing females (9.6%). Larger male infants, especially those with larger head circumferences, were more likely to be delivered by cesarean section because of failure to progress. Male infants of all sizes were more likely than females to be delivered because of fetal distress.

Relationship of twin zygosity and risk of preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Women who are pregnant with identical twins are just as likely to develop preeclampsia as those pregnant with fraternal twins. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy that is thought to partly involve an immune reaction against the fetus.
