Cohort study of twinning in an academic health center: changes in management and outcome over forty years

Article Abstract:

Some factors relating to twin births may change over the years. Researchers reviewed the records of twin births that occurred between 1952 and 1993 at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. There were 814 twin pregnancies during this time, more than half in the last ten years. The number of women having first children as twins increased. The proportion of pregnancies where one twin weighed 20% or more than the other remained the same. Twin birth weights and gestational age at birth declined over time, which is attributed to the hospital becoming a referral center. Cesarean delivery of both twins increased from 1.2% to 41%. Cesarean delivery of the second twin after vaginal birth of the first increased from none to 8%. Overall, death rates around the time of birth changed little. However, more twins weighing less than 1,500 gm survived as did more twins weighing 2,500 gm or more. Improved outcomes are probably due to improvements in newborn intensive care.

Cellular response to chemotherapy and radiation in cervical cancer

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted which investigates an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) status of cervical cancer cells and their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents and radiation. The data provide correlation of response to combined therapeutic modalities with HPV status of cervical cancer and expression of survivin and AKT.
