A public health nursing post: the tools for getting started

Article Abstract:

An assessment of the needs of the inhabitants of the Ivybridge Estate near London, England's Heathrow airport, was one of the first tasks undertaken when a specialist public health post on the council estate was first implemented. The overall picture of health needs among the estate's 2,700 inhabitants included high rates of depression and stress and significant numbers of children with developmental problems and special needs. The profile of the area in which the estate is located revealed that a broad view of health work with an accent on community development was needed.

On track for health

Article Abstract:

The Phelophepa mobile health train has been visiting rural regions of South Africa since 1994. Transport company Transnet sponsors the train which accommodates 50 members of staff who may work for up to 12 hours each day in various clinics. Muscoskeletal, respiratory and urogenital problems are the most common conditions amongst clients. Workers also train local volunteers in health education and conduct counselling workshops. A mobile unit visits each town two months before the train's arrival to seek contact information and to prepare local professionals for the visit.

Don't ignore it and it wil go away

Article Abstract:

Young men in the UK should be encouraged by nurses to use health services to avoid poor health in later life. Nurses need to know more about how youths think and also how to give them a better sense of self-worth. Young men are known to take more risks than women and to consult the medical profession less.
