Reengineering: avoiding the pitfalls and overcoming the barriers

Article Abstract:

Health care facilities can successfully reengineer by focusing on communication for all staff. Administrative staff also needs to anticipate the emotional impact reengineering will have. Staff can be persuaded to support changes by focusing on improved outcomes. Consultants' credibility can be established by hiring consultants willing to establish a presence throughout implementation, which may require up to 18 months. As the process of reengineering nears completion, the staff needs to be thanked for their support and patience.

What is the future of the OR director?

Article Abstract:

The OR director of the future will require business skills as well as clinical skills. Many managed care organizations see the OR as the most costly operation in the hospital and it is likely that OR directors will have to find ways to cut costs. OR directors feel harried by the focus on the bottom line rather than the patient. As positions are cut, some OR directors find themselves responsible for other hospital units. It is also hard to recruit qualified OR nurses.
