A randomized trial of diagnostic techniques for ventilator-associated pneumonia

Article Abstract:

A study compared the quantitative culture of bronchoalveolar-lavage fluid and culture of endotracheal aspirate in critically ill patients with suspected ventilator-associated pneumonia. Results showed that endotracheal aspiration with non-quantitative culture of the aspirate to diagnose ventilator-associated pneumonia was associated with clinical outcomes and antibiotic use similar to those associated with bronchoalveolar lavage and quantitative culture of the bronchoalveolar-lavage fluid.

Diagnosing ventilator-associated pneumonia

Article Abstract:

Doctors propose a strategy for diagnosing and treating ventilator-associated pneumonia. This is pneumonia that occurs in patients who are on a mechanical ventilator. It is difficult to find accurate non-invasive diagnostic tests for this type of pneumonia.
