Synchronization and relativity

Article Abstract:

High-precision synchronization over extended distances requires time measurement corrections that allow for metric effects related to the relative speed and gravitational differences between the linked locations. The Theory of Relativity predicts these effects. The Special Theory of Relativity (SR) concerns the transformations needed to relate measurements between two systems that move relative to each other at constant velocity. The General Theory of Relativity (GR) includes all possible motions in the transformations, including the effects of gravity. The concepts and formulae of both theories are necessary in electronic systems using high precision timing, especially space systems.
