Inclusion body myositis: an underdiagnosed condition?

Article Abstract:

Inclusion body myositis appears to be an underdiagnosed cause of inflammatory myopathy. Inclusion body myositis was first described in 1971 and is characterized clinically by slowly progressive muscle inflammation and microscopically by inclusions in cell nuclei and cytoplasm. Typically, it develops after age 50, is more common in men than women and does not respond well to treatment with corticosteroid drugs. Eleven patients were diagnosed with definite or probable inclusion body myositis following examination of 1,319 muscle biopsy specimens. Among the 11 patients, 10 reported muscle weakness. All 10 reported leg muscle weakness and eight reported arm muscle weakness. All 10 showed signs of muscle wasting, seven had a loss of ankle jerks and four had a loss of knee reflexes. Eight patients were men and three were women. Five patients received treatment, but none showed any improvement.
