A systematic review of the clinical significance of pulmonary mycobacterium kansasii isolates in HIV infection

Article Abstract:

The studies suggest treatment of HIV-infected patients with pulmonary Mycobacterium kansasii infection in the presence of multiple positive cultures and clinical and radiographic abnormalities. A systematic literature review was conducted to examine whether HIV-infected patients who had M.kansasii isolated from respiratory specimens have an indolent infection not requiring treatment and to determine the utility of diagnostic criteria in distinguishing disease from indolent infection

Body mass index at time of HIV diagnosis: a strong and independent predictor of survival

Article Abstract:

The study assessed how well body mass index (BMI: kg/m2) predicts survival, as identification of basic prognostic indicators of HIV infection is essential before widespread antiretroviral therapy can be implemented in low-technology settings. It is found that BMI at diagnosis is a strong, independent predictor of survival in HIV-infected patients in West Africa, and BMI may also prove as a useful guide for deciding when to initiate antiretroviral therapy.

Hydroxyurea: Eight years' experience

Article Abstract:

Data from a long-term ongoing study with 160 patients treated with the hydroxyurea/didanosine (HU/ddl) combination were presented. HU/ddl combination was an attractive option for treatment-naive patients, which resulted in a cohort that differs somewhat from most others and is typical of most developing countries.
