Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Central Council introduced its Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives, and Health Visitors in 1983. It has dominated the profession since then, with nurses living in fear of a judgement that they have failed to meet the professional standards required of them. However, the code has failed to make widespread improvements to nursing standards. Nursing care across the UK continues to be of patchy quality. The code's major problem is that it sets standards which are unrealistically high, yet it condemns nurses who fail to meet them.

A tale of two tribes

Article Abstract:

Developing a better communication system and sharing objectives has enabled a team of ward nurses and paediatric health visitors to improve the level of care they give while learning to appreciate the skills of each other in a team situation. The review of communication systems was needed after a workshop training session revealsed barriers between the two health care teams. Better documentation and record keeping has allowed the teams to fully understand individual cases and work towards a common goal.
