A treatment for loiasis

Article Abstract:

Up to 13 million people in Africa are considered to be infected with a form of parasitical disease, spread by the Loa loa adult worm. Patients presenting with swellings in parts of the body must be considered at risk from loiasis if they have a history of travel to Africa. Drug therapy is required to totally kill both the adult Loa loa worm and any eggs which may have infiltrated the blood. Constant blood monitoring should be performed to measure levels of eggs in the blood, while pain management relieves the patient of any associated pain caused by swellings formed under the skin by the parasite.

All in the family

Article Abstract:

Community nurses can help families to come to terms with nursing a sick relative by developing a structure of family nursing built on holistic care and thorough planning. Important counselling skills are essential for community nurses, who need to be able to bridge family difficulties when establishing a care routine. Encouraging family members to take an interest in the medical side of a patient's illness is one of the first steps in building understanding, compassion and care skills, which should prove beneficial in the long run for the patient.
