Country life

Article Abstract:

Research has shown that health care provision is poorer in rural areas than in urban areas because of the way resources are allocated. Levels of unemployment, quality of housing and car ownership have been used to determine need but while this may be effective in urban areas, country people need cars to travel around and they have better houses because they are cheaper. They may not visit a doctor very often because of problems getting there; not because they are fitter. Other indicators of need must be used for rural areas because the current set cannot be applied effectively.

Limited access

Article Abstract:

People who live in rural communities have problems accessing health care because of transport difficulties. The often face long journeys to visit a doctor and they are 10% less likely to go to the doctor than people in towns. Community nurses in Wales organised car maintenance courses because they were worried about getting stranded. A volunteer driver service in Shropshire takes old or frail patients to hospital because they cannot rely on public transport. Discussions are in progress to centralise health services even further and this will make them even more unattainable.

Down on the farm

Article Abstract:

A survey has shown that farmers face a multitude of health risks, such as exposure to insecticides and animal diseases. They also suffer from stress as a result of health scares which attack their livelihood and having to comply with European directives. Farmers feel the National Health Service (NHS) is not catering for their needs. Farmers want to get advice from someone who knows about farming, doctors should be more familiar with the health problems they experience and the NHS should liaise with farming unions. Farming journals should focus more on health issues.
